A truth table for a sentence represents its truth value in every possible situation (i.e., in every assignment of truth values to the sentence letters from which it was built). The reference column(s) are the column(s) under the atomic sentence(s) on the left hand side of the table. They list all the relevant situations. The main column is the column that gives us the truth value of the sentence in every possible situation.
